Awakening Young Minds against Drug Addiction

The Anti-Drug Committee of St. Alphonsa College organized an awareness programme on the theme “Awakening Young Minds against Drug Addiction” on 11th September 2025 at the Multimedia Hall from 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. All first-year undergraduate students participated in the programme. The programme commenced at 10.30 a.m. with a melodious prayer song rendered by the college choir. Next, Rashika of I B.A. did the Bible reading to evoke the spirit of holiness. It is followed by a formal welcome address delivered by Ms. Abitha of II M.A. English. Dr. Sivanesan, Vice Principal, delivered a special address highlighting the importance of spreading awareness about the hazards of drug and substance abuse among youth. Later, Dr. Angel Jayalet Rani, Head of the Department of Tamil, introduced the chief guest, Dr. Francis Xavier Nelson, Director, Thiruppumunai Addiction Ministry, Nagercoil, and his team. The session was then handed over to the resource persons. Dr. Francis Xavier Nelson and his team explained in detail the harmful effects of drug and alcohol addiction. Through real-life case studies and experiences, he emphasized the need for timely intervention and rehabilitation. The session was both informative and inspiring, helping the students understand the dangers of substance abuse and ways to support those struggling with addiction. Towards the end, the students took a pledge against drug abuse, reaffirming their commitment to live a healthy and responsible life. Gifts were distributed to students who actively participated during the interactive session. A few students also shared their feedback, expressing how the programme had motivated them. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Anto Mabisa of II M.Sc. Physics. The entire programme was smoothly anchored by Jeni Liya, Sushma, and Mary Angel of II B.A. English. The Anti-Drug Committee sincerely thanks the College Management for providing this valuable opportunity to create awareness and strengthen young minds against the menace of drug addiction.
