Onam Celebrations:
The sprawling quadrangle of St. Alphonsa College of Arts & Science, Soosaipuram, Karinkal, came alive today on 04-09-2025 Thursday as the campus resonated with the vibrant hues and joyful rhythms of Onam 2025. The celebration unfolded as a splendid tapestry of tradition, artistry and togetherness that capturing the essence of Kerala’s beloved harvest festival and weaving it seamlessly into the spirit of campus life. The morning air was filled with the fragrance of fresh blossoms as students from various departments meticulously designed intricate Athapookalam patterns. The floral symphony set the perfect prelude for a day devoted to heritage and harmony.
The formal celebration began with a solemn prayer led by Rev. Fr. Ajin Jose, Assistant Correspondent, invoking blessings of peace and prosperity. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp by all dignitaries illuminated the stage, symbolising knowledge, unity and the spirit of Onam. In his inaugural address, Rev. Dr. Angelo Joseph, Principal, eloquently spoke on the significance of Onam as more than a festival — as a season of sharing joy, spreading peace and nurturing the unity of the nation. His words resonated deeply, reminding the gathering that celebrations gain their true meaning when they inspire togetherness and compassion.
The cultural segment began on a graceful note with an Onam Welcome Dance, performed by students who mesmerised the audience with delicate movements and synchronised steps. This was followed by the ever-delightful Maveli competition, where students donned the persona of the legendary King Mahabali. With humour, charm and dramatic flair, participants brought the benevolent monarch to life, delighting the audience and rekindling the tale that lies at the heart of Onam.
A felicitation address by Rev. Fr. Thomas Poovathumoottil, Correspondent, added depth to the occasion. He emphasised that Onam is not merely about festivity, but also about inner transformation — a reminder that each individual must embrace values of kindness, humility and renewal as part of the celebration.
The chief guest, Ms. Suranya Smrithy Sajay, President of the Kanyakumari Fishnet Manufacturers Association, addressed the gathering with warmth and insight. She spoke on the need to carry the spirit of Onam into everyday life, highlighting that unity fosters creativity, generosity, happiness and sharing. Her words left a lasting impression, inspiring students to cherish cultural traditions as guiding values in their personal journeys. The prize distribution ceremony was a moment of pride and jubilation. The winners of the competitions Athapookalam and Maveli were felicitated.
The noon session sparkled with youthful energy as the quadrangle transformed into an arena for traditional Onam games. The thrill of tug-of-war and the laughter-filled “hit the pot” contest rekindled the rustic charm of Kerala’s countryside. Cheers and applause echoed across the campus as participants, faculty and spectators joined in the festive fervour. I wholeheartedly thank all the committee convenors, staff members and non-teaching staff for their full involvement in the program. My special gratitude to the Correspondent, Principal, Assistant Correspondent and Vice Principal for rendering their support and guidance to make today's event successful. Thank you and Onashamsakal.
